Big John Steak & Onion - Burton: Legendary Subs with Fresh, Fast Service in Flint

For as long as I can remember, Big John's Steak and Sub on Fenton Road in Flint has been an essential cornerstone of the Flint community. I honestly don't recall a time when they weren't thete, and I'm grateful for the decades they've spent serving the people. I often wonder why this business model never expanded nationwide. The quality is certainly there. The subs there are outstanding, easily some of the best I've ever had. They are prepared fast, fresh, consistent, with a smile, and always hit the spot. I recently saw a review suggesting the quality has gone "downhill fast," complaining about the size of the subs, and being charged for extra peppers, and balking at the overall price ($30 for two sandwiches). Frankly, this reviewer seems to be living in the past and fails to grasp the reality of running a small business today. Big John's menu knows they offer several sizes, ranging from small to large, all at varying price points. There prices are in line with other sub shops full stop. Since the pandemic, small businesses face significantly higher costs for supplies, utilities, and, critically, employee wages. They can't absorb these costs and survive. Major chains have drastically increase prices. Some restaurants now automatically add "service charges" just to cover staff costs. The complaint about being charged extra for peppers is easily explained. If you are asking for extra servings—especially a side cup that is not a standard part of the sandwich—of course, you will pay for it. Businesses have to track inventory and manage costs, and giving away unlimited extras is not sustainable. Big John’s is a Flint treasure. They aren't taking advantage of customers; they are simply adjusting to the current economy while continuing to serve great food. I've been a loyal customer for decades and encourage everyone to support this essential local institution.

Down hill fast in a couple weeks. Today was over charged $5 and charged for cups of peppers. $30 for two sandwiches and the sandwiches had gotten smaller. I used to love this place for 40 years been coming to big John's but not going to support a business that takes advantage of customers like this. I have left many good reviews and today is the last review as we won't be back again. I used to barely be able to finish my sandwich today it's like a regular steak and cheese. Not again folks. Lost my business for good.

Excellent customer service everyone was kind and patient. The fastest big John's I've ever gone too and look at that cold ham and cheese! It was so good! Also when our order started to get pretty complicated they didn't mess it up which I find amazing.

Travelled all the way from Tulsa Oklahoma just to try the steak and onions sandwich with the famous red sauce.

Love this place, just suggest drain that meat for a few seconds so does not soak through the bun so fast, however damn tastyI

I love Big Johns steak and onion quesadilla! The service was fast, the food was hot. Big John's is a little on the pricy side, so it's more of a treat when I do decide to have it.
